Cut paper stars for a lightweight decoration

One reusable template and two sizes are enough to build an arrangement.

For a first set, choose flat stars rather than complicated folding. Draw a five-point shape on scrap card and adjust it until you like the points. A slightly irregular star can be intentional. If using a template found elsewhere, respect its usage conditions.

Cut out the template and trace it onto paper or lightweight card. Two sizes add variety without making preparation lengthy. Test your paper: thin sheets may fold at the points, while thick card becomes harder to cut. Scissors suited to the user are enough, with appropriate supervision for children. Make one complete star before tracing the entire batch so you can change the size if necessary.

Arrange before attaching

Lay stars on a table with spaces between them. They can form a line, a cluster or a scatter around one larger star. Photograph the chosen arrangement if you want to reproduce it. Avoid covering every part of the surface: gaps make the silhouettes easier to read.

For a card or poster, use adhesive compatible with the support and dry it flat. For temporary wall decoration, select a permitted fixing suited to the finish rather than assuming removable adhesive will leave no trace. Do not attach anything to a light fitting or near a heat source.

A hanging version requires thread and attachments appropriate to its weight. Keep it away from young children, animals and walking routes. If you simply want to decorate a table, stars placed on a dry support avoid the need for a cord. They should not come into contact with food.

Store the stars between two pieces of card to protect their points. Keep the template alongside them, perhaps noting the paper used if you want to extend the set. Next time, replace only damaged pieces. This decoration works with few materials because the shape remains simple and the arrangement does not have to be identical on every occasion. A change of spacing or background can be enough to give the same stars a different appearance.
