Select the fabrics
Gather clean, dry scraps of reasonably similar weight. Heavy fabric pulls more strongly on the support than lightweight cotton. Choose a few related colours and reject materials that shed excessively for the intended use. This is an indoor decoration, not a toy; keep cords and small pieces out of young children's reach.
Measure the intended location before preparing the cord. Allow extra length for attaching it and check that nothing will hang into a walking route or near flames and hot appliances. Do not hang a garland over a child's sleeping area. Supports and fixings must suit the finished weight.
Cut a few trial strips
First cut three identical strips and test a knot around the cord. The visible length will be shorter than the original strip. Adjust proportions before cutting the entire collection. Suitable fabric scissors make a cleaner cut; work on a clear surface and put them away afterwards.
For a no-sew version, fold a strip in half, take the loop behind the cord and pass both ends through it. Tighten gently without distorting the fabric. Check the result with your materials: some slip and need a different method. Do not add glue at random if it might stiffen or stain the decoration. A small trial can save cutting dozens of unsuitable pieces.
Arrange the colours on the floor before attaching every strip. An irregular but balanced sequence can be more interesting than strict repetition. Leave spaces if you want a lighter garland. You do not have to use every available scrap, and keeping a few spare pieces makes later repairs easier.
Hang it with appropriate fixings and confirm it does not obstruct an opening. For storage, loosely wind it around cardboard or place it in a dry box. If a strip becomes dirty, consider its care requirements and those of the other components before washing everything. A construction that comes apart lets you replace one strip and reuse the cord for another combination. Take it down when the occasion ends rather than leaving a damaged decoration hanging indefinitely.
