Browse a flea market with a small budget

Use a few criteria to inspect objects, negotiate politely and bring home things with a purpose.

Know what actually has a place

Before leaving, choose one or two kinds of object that have a place in your home. Record shelf dimensions, a lampshade diameter or a colour you are seeking. A photograph of the space may help. Set a total budget that includes transport, cleaning or repair. A cheap object becomes less economical if it requires buying furniture to store it.

Carry a sturdy bag, a small tape measure and a payment method suitable for the sellers. Check the organiser's information about times and access. Arrange transport before buying anything bulky instead of hoping it will somehow fit into your vehicle at the end of the morning.

Inspect before discussing price

Look at joints, cracks and hidden surfaces, asking permission before turning over something fragile. Check whether a game is complete or a book has missing pages. Visual inspection alone cannot establish the safety of an electrical appliance. If its condition cannot be checked properly, leaving it behind is a reasonable decision.

Ask a specific question about a defect or missing component. Do not invent a problem to obtain a reduction. If the price is above your budget, politely suggest an amount you are genuinely prepared to pay and accept a refusal. Negotiation does not entitle you to persist or disparage the seller.

Allow yourself to buy nothing

Before paying, ask where the object will go as soon as you return home. If the answer remains vague, take a photograph with permission or leave it. Avoid buying something simply because it might suit another person; check whether they actually want it first.

Clean purchases according to their materials. Keep textiles or objects with suspicious signs separate before mixing them with your belongings. Do not use a container for food when its intended use or coating is uncertain. Keep the measurements that proved useful. Your next search will be more focused even if this outing ends without a purchase, and you will have preserved space for something that fits better.
